Nicoletta Batistella's text about her relationship with the Ikarian panigiria - in Greek

Τhe following text is written in Greek by Nicoletta Batistella herself in 2012. It is an "autobiographical" little text she had written for me, when I was writing my master thesis, and I needed foreign people who come for many years in Ikaria to describe to me their "experience" of the dance and "glendi" in Ikaria and how this is transformed throughout the years....I think her text is a very meaningful one for the "hospitality" in the relationship of the Icarians and the foreign people as well as for the new tendencies we see in the summer panigiria, the very crowded ones.

Με λένε Νικολέττα και είμαι Ιταλίδα από το Μιλάνο. Ήρθα πρώτη φορά στην Ικαρία το 1989 για λίγες μέρες διακοπές και ξαναήρθα το 2000 για μαθήματα γλώσσας και από τότε έρχομαι σχεδόν κάθε χρόνο ή για διακοπές ή για σεμινάρια χορού.

Η πρώτη φορά που είδα ένα γλέντι στην Ικαρία, ήταν για ένα γάμο και ήταν το καλοκαίρι του 2000. Θυμάμαι ότι μου έκανε εντύπωση που οι νιόπαντροι μάς κάλεσαν πολύ εύκολα στον γάμο την τελευταία στιγμή και στον γάμο ήταν καλεσμένοι η οικογένεια, οι γείτονες, το χωριό και σχεδόν όλο το νησί! Αυτή η φιλοξενία, θερμή και στενή, με συγκίνησε καθώς φαινόμουν ότι και εγώ ήμουνα καριωτίνα! Από τις πρώτες φορές που πήγα σε ένα γλέντι στην Ικαρία, δεν αισθάνθηκα ποτέ ξένη. Μιλούσα με αυτούς που ήταν στο δικό μου τραπέζι και χόρευα με ντόπιους, αν και τότε δεν ήξερα να χορεύω. Πριν από αυτά τα γλέντια που είδα στην Ικαρία πήγαινα σε άλλα γλέντια σε άλλα νησιά και εκεί αισθανόμουν πάντα ξένη, δεν χόρευα καθόλου και είδα - πολλές φορές- ξένους που προσπαθούσαν να χορεύουν και ντόπιους που προσπαθούσαν να τους αποκλείσουν. Στην Ικαρία, από ό,τι είδα εγώ, αυτό δεν συμβαίνει ποτέ, όλοι είναι καλεσμένοι, αν ακολουθούν λίγους κανόνες καλής συμπεριφοράς.

Εγώ έρχομαι στην Ικαρία για τα ωραία γλέντια, την ωραία ατμόσφαιρα και ενέργεια που υπάρχει και για τη φύση και τους ανθρώπους και για τον ρυθμό της ζωής που είναι πολύ απλός και ήρεμος. Βεβαίως τα τελευταία χρόνια είδα ότι τα καλοκαιρινά γλέντια έχουν αλλάξει πολύ. Υπάρχει σχεδόν πάντα μια ωραία ατμόσφαιρα και ενέργεια, αλλά έχω την εντύπωση ότι η Ικαρία γεμίζει από έναν «νυχτερινό λαό», που πηγαίνει από το ένα γλέντι στο άλλο συνέχεια, ένας «λαός» που τρώει, πίνει, καπνίζει, διασκεδάζει, χωρίς να κοιμάται ποτέ! 'Όταν έρχεται αυτός ο «νυχτερινός λαός» σε ένα γλέντι, η ατμόσφαιρα αλλάζει πολύ, οι ηλικιωμένοι φεύγουν ή κάθονται και μόνο αυτοί οι νέοι ξενύχτηδες χορεύουν ή προσπαθούν να χορέψουν, αφού γενικά δεν γνωρίζουν την παράδοση. Μετά την άφιξή τους, η πίστα γεμίζει κόσμο περισσότερο από αυτό που αντέχει και εάν είσαι μέσα, αρχίζουν να σε τραβούν, στηρίζονται πάνω σου βαριά και τελειώνει η διασκέδαση…

Nicoletta Battistella was between my first students in my first class of teaching Greek to foreigners in Ikaria...Ever since we met each other every year in Ikaria and in other places in Europe, where she would join our dance workshops with dances from Ikaria. She had first learnt greek dance on the island, in the "panigiria" and she felt this island as her "own" place to dance and its music the most familiar to her...She had done a lot of work with other people in Milan involved in folk dancing to promote Ikaria and generally Greek dancing.  She had also translated the introductory text of the CD Ikaria Methexis in italian, so to help Italians also get in touch with ikarian music... She had organised many workshops, inviting musicians from Ikaria to organize a live event ( Lefteris Poulis, Yannis Loukos and Dimitris Spanos) or inviting dancers from Ikaria and Greece generally : Valia, Filippos , Irene, Ada, Nikos, Mihalis, Eleni, Florentia...

To all of us, she would be a perfect host, offering her generous hospitality with her dear husband Francesco at their wonderful house in Milan. Francesco and Nicoletta being two young architects had designed one of the first "bioclimatical" houses of Italy, showing how choices close to nature can ameliorate our lives...

Nicoletta was always smiling and happy, she was born that way. She was the kind of person who would feel all the dynamics of a group or a relationship and would work silently to help every one have a good time. She was a strong person giving help to weaker persons, with a generous heart, as we say in Greek.... She used to say " Χαλαρά, σιγά σιγά... όπως στην Ικαρία, που οι άνθρωποι σέβονται τους ρυθμούς της φύσης και της ζωής"...( "Slowly, in a loose way..like in Ikaria, where people respect the rythmes of nature and life....!)

Her relationship with music and dance was a very particular one... It is as if she was being transformed to a "flower", she would move her hands and body in a very "subtle" way, her dancing was smooth and full of heart...I remember she would tell me she prefers the dancing of islands and Asia Minor because the rythmes and body movement of island dancing was closer to a harmony she was able to feel... She was dancing island dances like a "Kariotina" (=Icarian woman) really, if you would see her in a panigiri, you would not understand that she was not from the island, only if she started talking to you, as her very good Greek had the typical - and melodical to me...- italian accent...!

I saw Nicoletta for the last time in Naples last May, in the first greek dance workshop organised there by Anna Lisa, another IkariaDance friend. She had come with other dancers from Milan, always smiling and happy and kind... She came to tell me discreetly that "this time" she would not be able to dance as her body was very weak from the disease which was torturing her. She just came for the "parea", she had been doing that the last year... She was around all the time listening to the music and participating with her heart and face... sometimes I would see her with the corner of my eye that she was trying to dance a little bit with her feet alone, even for one minute, silent and smiling in the corner, and I was thinking "Maybe now she can not, but once this therapy finishes, she shall surely can again...Let's not pressure her now...." During the "glendi" (Greak feast) organised the night, we danced together a tsifteteli, our last dance together, and she was very gentle moving and her mind was also somewhere else, I remember I thought "How light she is her dancing...like a feather...." and I tried to dance in the same way with her, to escort her well in our couple dancing...

Nicoletta had made us believe that she would surely survive out of this struggle, although we knew how serious the disease was, noone really ever believed that woman would go away... So, I remember when we danced "Symbethera" during the workshop, a dance that she loved a lot, I thought by myself " Let's not press her now to dance as a first dancer, since she is so weak, we shall do it in Ikaria, in August, when she shall be better...." And I didn't invite her to dance with me...And that moment I lost this last kariotikos dance with her, as in July she wrote to me at 06.00 a.m. one day that she was not feeling well and she would not be in a condition to travel to Ikaria for our IkariaDance Project...And then I knew... And I cried for our last kariotikos together not danced in Naples... You should always dance as if it is your last day, as the song says " Toύτ'η γης που την πατούμε, ούλοι μέσα θε να μπούμε"...Wise words that we do not realise them when we dance on them....It seems that life gave her enormous pain, but nobody ever understood it, as she would never complain...Until the end, she was admiring the little wonders of life, like the flowers, the animals, the dancing, the music, the language...I am really proud I met her and we became friends.

Nicoletta left us the second day of IkariaDance Project this year, on the 24th August. Claudia, her friend from Milan informed Flavia, and she came to tell me with Makis in my room early in the morning before we would leave for our excursion to Therma and Akamatra...I can not describe how I felt. As if a member of my family was gone.

Nicoletta had left as a last wish to her beloved husband Francesco that we do a "feast" for her and we dance for her. So, we did on the 28th August with Skantzakas, Yannis, Alexandros and Maria that knew her well...We tried to dance in smile, and we sang in smile, as she would like us to do, remembering that we are all passing from this life and we need to be the best human beings we can to our fellow people, to nature and to ourselves.

This was her example in life.

We shall try to follow this example...

We shall always keep her in our hearts...

And we shall always dance for her as well ...

We send all our love to her husband, family and friends....

P.S.1> Checking the Greek Orthodox "name day" calendar, as we call it, the 24th of August, there are two Saints whose memories are  celebrated: Kosmas Aitolos and St Eftihios (Ιερομάρτυς Άγιος Ευτύχιος) Τhe name Eftihios is Greek means the "Happy one" in Modern Greek and "the one having good luck" in Ancient Greek…

IkariaDance 2014 is over...

Η παρέα των χορευτών του IkariaDance Project 2014 ήρθε πάλι και φέτος  στον Αρμενιστή Ικαρίας στις 22 – 30.8 και συμμετείχε σε ένα πρόγραμμα χορού και πολιτισμού με την υποστήριξη του Γραφείου Τουρισμού Ιkaria – Holidays (http://ikaria-holidays.com)  και του Cavos Bay Hotel. (http://www.cavosbay.com.gr)  Το Project στήριξαν οι εκπαιδευτές ελληνικού χορού Χρήστος Θεολόγος (για τους χορούς της Μ. Ασίας), Χριστιάνα Κατσαρού (χοροί της Ικαρίας), Ευθύμιος Ευαγγέλου (Χοροί της Σάμου) και Γιάννης Πλαγιωτάκης  - Νίκος Κουφάκης (χοροί της Κρήτης). Η παρέα των χορευτών αποτελούνταν από Έλληνες και ξένους από χορευτικούς συλλόγους διαφόρων χωρών όπως Ιταλία, Βέλγιο, Γαλλία, Γερμανία, Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Η.Π.Α, Ισπανία, Νορβηγία, Αυστρία, Ουγγαρία και Ισραήλ.

Για ακόμη μια χρονιά οι χορευτές από το Eργαστήρι Τέχνης και Πολιτισμού (www.etepo.gr) καθώς και χορευτές από την Ικαρία εμπλούτισαν την χορευτική εμπειρία των επισκεπτών και έγιναν τρικούβερτα γλέντια σε διάφορα χωριά! Σε αυτούς προστέθηκε και το κέφι των Κρητών φίλων μας από το «Χορόσπιτο» του Ηρακλείου Κρήτης και το γλέντι άναψε για τα καλά! (www.xorospito.gr)

Φέτος τα εργαστήρια τραγουδιού και μικρασιατικών ρυθμών εμψυχώθηκαν με μοναδικό τρόπο από τους Βασίλη Σκλαπάνη, Στέλιο Γιαννουλόπουλο, Μαρία Λαμπροπούλου και Νίκο Πολίτη και φυσικά τον πρόεδρο του συλλόγου κ. Χρήστο Θεολόγο που μύησε τους ξένους φίλους μας στον πολιτισμό της Μ.Ασίας. Στην αυτοσχέδια «κομπανία» του Project φέτος έπαιξαν η Γαλλίδα παραδοσιακή βιολονίστρια Valerie Maindron, η Βελγίδα Αnnick Van Steerteghem στο τουμπερλέκι, ο Ιvo Ruello στο μπουζούκι και η Paola Pierantoni στον μπαγλαμά. Για τους χορούς και τις μουσικές της Σάμου έκανε μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα παρουσίαση ο βασικός συνεργάτης του Project χοροδιδάσκαλος Ευθύμιος Ευαγγέλου με την βοήθεια του χορευτή Φίλιππου Πυργιώτη. Για τους χορούς και τη λαογραφία της Κρήτης ενθουσίασαν όλους οι χοροδιδάσκαλοι Γιάννης Πλαγιωτάκης και Νίκος Κουφάκης!

Στο ευρύτερο πολιτιστικό πρόγραμμα που επιμελήθηκε η κ. Κατσαρού έγιναν διάφορες παρουσιάσεις - συζητήσεις:  η βιβλιοπαρουσίαση που έγινε από την συγγραφέα Topsy Douris στα αγγλικά για το βιβλίο της «Icarian tales» μάγεψε όλους και έδωσε έναυσμα για μια ωραία συζήτηση για την πρόσφατη «έκρηξη» του ερευνητικού ενδιαφέροντος για την Ικαρία. Ο Αlexander Spitzing σε ένα εργαστήριο θεωρίας της μουσικής μοιράστηκε μαζί μας βιώματα από τη θητεία του στα καριώτικα πανηγύρια. Τέλος, όλοι γοητεύθηκαν ιδιαίτερα από την παρουσίαση του Δημήτρη Σπανού για την κατασκευή της καριώτικης τσαμπουνοφυλάκας και τη συζήτηση με τον Φίλιππα Καρίμαλη για τη συμβολή του τοπικού κρασιού στο γλέντι, καθώς έτσι οι ξένοι φίλοι μας κατανόησαν βαθύτερα την ιδιαίτερη φυσιογνωμία της Ικαρίας σε σχέση με το γλεντικό φαινόμενο.

Όλοι συγκινήθηκαν από την ατμόσφαιρα στα παραδοσιακά καριώτικα πανηγύρια στα χωριά Βρακάδες και Μάραθο! Επίσης αξέχαστες θα μείνουν σε όλους οι μουσικές μας βραδιές- ανταμώματα με καριώτες μουσικούς και χορευτές: στον Να με τον Σταύρο Νικολαϊδη και τον Επαμεινώνδα Βαλσαμή, στην Ακαμάτρα με τον Δημήτρη Σπανό, τον Ισίδωρο Βαρδαρό και την Χριστίνα Κουτσιαύτη, στον Αρμενιστή με την κομπανία του Λευτέρη Πούλη ή Σκάντζακα, τον Γιάννη Λούκο, Αλέξανδρο Spietzing και τη Μαρία Παντελάκη! Μεγάλη χαρά μας έδωσε στο τελευταίο μας γλέντι στον Άγιο Πολύκαρπο η αγαπημένη μας παραδοσιακή τραγουδίστρια Καίτη Κουλλιά που μας τίμησε με την παρουσία της και καθήλωσε όλους με τα πανέμορφα τραγούδια που μοιράστηκε μαζί μας συνοδευόμενη από τους νέους μουσικούς Γιώργο Στρούπα, Μάνθο και Εύα Κράτσα.

Μεγάλες ευχαριστίες στον Νίκο Κούβαρη για τη συμβολή στα εργαστήρια  χορού και στις γαστρονομικές εκπλήξεις που μας επεφύλαξε! Και ευχαριστίες στον Δημήτρη Μελή για τη διοργάνωση του προγράμματος περιηγήσεων, στον Δημήτρη Ρήγα και όλη την οικογένεια του Cavos Bay καθώς και σε όλους τους Καριώτες φίλους για την αμέριστη υποστήριξή τους!

Όλοι οι συμμετέχοντες στο Project επέστρεψαν στις πατρίδες τους ενθουσιασμένοι που σε μια μικρή γωνιά της ελληνικής γης τα γλέντια καλά κρατούν αβίαστα, συλλογικά, με ρίζες αρχέγονες και με πρακτικές που αγκαλιάζουν ενίοτε το παραδοσιακό και το νεωτερικό σε μια ιδιότυπη σχέση ... Και έχοντας βιώσει αυτές τις μέρες από κοντά τη μουσική, τον χορό, τις ιστορίες, τους ανθρώπους, την ατμόσφαιρα που χαρίζουν τα γλέντια μάς εκμυστηρεύτηκαν ότι τώρα καταλαβαίνουν τι είναι ο ελληνικός πολιτισμός στη ζωντανή του έκφανση, μακριά από τα συνήθη τουριστικά στερεότυπα...Μεγάλη χαρά και ευθύνη για την παρέα μας να συνεχίσει με θέρμη τις ‘χορο-μαζώξεις’ της και του χρόνου!

H παρέα του IkariaDance

Το IkariaDance Project  2014 είναι αφιερωμένο στη μνήμη της φίλης μας Νικολέτα Battistella, εξαιρετικής φίλης της Ικαρίας και του χορού τα τελευταία 15 χρόνια, που έφυγε από κοντά μας στις 25 Αυγούστου 2014 για να χορέψει σε άλλα μέρη κάπου μακριά....
