IkariaDance: An innovative program of cultural tourism based on the Ikarian feast culture.

 

Greek tourism is at its peak, however if one is looking for quality cultural oriented tourism there are few opportunities out there, even if Greece is so rich in tradition and heritage. IkariaDance  is a group of friends and volunteers from Etepo association (www.etepo.gr) and other cultural associations who aim to connect dance friends from all around the world with the Ikarian values of dance and feast culture. GreekTV interviewed Christiana Katsarou, teacher – folklorist and one of the organisers of the project, in order to find out more about this project that gathers people from around the world to dance together!
What is IkariaDance?
IkariaDance is a Project aiming to promote cultural tourism in the island of Ikaria emphasizing on Greek folk culture (Greek traditional dances, traditional songs and music). Moreover, the workshops of the Project aim to familiarize participants with the everyday life of Greeks, their language and their traditional culture still alive in many aspects, like their feasts, their food culture etc. And above all, Ikaria Dance is a group of friends and volunteers who wish to share their passion for Greek culture with people from all around the world…

Who can participate?
All foreign adults who love Greece, its language and culture can participate in the workshops of the Project. Adults who want to learn Greek dances, Greek songs or the Greek language in an experiential way and want to interact with Greeks, understanding their ideas, attitudes and contemporary reflection on their cultural values. Adults who wish to focus on a deeper experience of the Greek culture and its origins and not a superficial touristic experience.

 

Why did you choose Ikaria to host IkariaDance?
Ikaria is an island of a unique cultural identity, with a natural unpretentious beauty and a rich historical background. The most important about Ikaria is its people who enjoy and share their local culture in a most generous way, through community activities (like the panigiria, the local feasts) that embrace all generations and all types of people in their society. Ikaria’s people do not organize their life, so to offer a “directed authenticity” to visitors, so that they consume it like in other Greek touristic islands. The Ikarians live their life as they always did and they are kind and hospitable, so to let other people experience their way of life, which focuses on simple things: nice local food and wine, very rich dance and music culture, human contact and respect for simplicity and sincerity.

What aspects of Greek culture do you introduce to the participants?
We introduce Greek dances, songs and music to our friends who are lovers of Greek traditional culture and arts. We also offer workshops in Greek language for beginners and advanced learners in collaboration with experienced teachers of the Ikaria Greek Language project (www.ikariagreeklanguage.gr) . Moreover, we host parallel sessions of conversation classes discussing issues of history, anthropology and sociology in our Greek language Kafenio, with Greeks who are experts in their fields. Visiting local people in their place of work and creation (musicians, cooks, producers of local products, artists etc.), we try to get in contact with their life’s reality, their ideas, their values and their hopes.

What is the idea behind  IkariaDance?
The idea is the real contact with elements about the contemporary folk Greek culture and the way Greeks think and act in their everyday life, elements that are usually not easy to explain to foreigners, as most foreigners have a rather stereotypical knowledge about Greek culture. (syrtaki, souvlaki etc.) This real contact and deeper understanding can only take place through real emotions, real relationships and common life experience, in both an emotive and cognitive approach. So, truly speaking, the idea behind was to share our truth with other people from around the world that are interested to get in touch with that truth. The idea also was to promote more the understanding on Greek islands’ culture and the Greek heritage of Asia Minor music and dances, since when we started the Project in 2004, these fields were not presented in the way we felt they should be presented.

It was a surprise for us that so many different people from so many different cultural backgrounds become one “parea”,  one “big family”

What are your future goals?
Our future practical goals are  to enrich the variety of our workshops, offering more specialized workshops for Greek dance, Greek traditional songs and musical instruments. With Christos Theologos, president of Etepo association and folklore researcher, we plan to participate in university research projects so as to reflect on practices and ideas of our interest in the field of folklore studies and cultural anthropology. We would also be very interested to offer scholarships for  youth of the Greek diaspora and teachers of Greek dance and culture worldwide and we are searching for funds to do so.


How do you see IkariaDance in the future?
Trying to share our culture, we learnt a lot ourselves through all these years, about us, our history, our folk life and art, and above all, our need to preserve our identity with creativity and an open minded spirit. After all these years we have developed an intercultural experience and understanding, realizing the common ground for many of our traditions or practices around the Mediterranean Sea. It was a surprise for us that so many different people from so many different cultural backgrounds become one “parea” (group of friends), one “big family” during the Project. We met many wonderful people from many countries, with whom we have become friends and we care deeply for each other. So, we care to continue sharing our passion for life, music, dance, Greek language and our common ideas about the worlds’ local cultures that we need to experience and learn from.
Our future goals are just to continue this journey together with our friends. And make more friends who can understand our vision of actually experiencing our Greek culture and identity today. We have a long way to go, and the only way to do it well is to do it together!

For this year's 15th IkariaDance & Language project in August (23-31)... a video dedicated to all those of you who have helped us all these years to grow and become the IkariaDance parea! Ikaria is an island of the East Aegean Sea near the islands Samos, Chios, Mykonos. An island of a unique nature, a fascinating history and living traditions to explore.

The traditional local feasts (“paniyiria”), involve in a remarkable way all generations and still remain the centre of the social and cultural life in Ikaria. Recent research on the high longevity rates of the island (Blue Zones) reveals to the rest of the world what all Ikarians have known for centuries: music, dance and life with strong family and community bonds help you enjoy real life and live longer… IKARIADANCE project aims to connect dance friends from all around the world with the Ikarian values of dance and feast culture.

To Alati tis Gis - Ikaria September 2016

 A nice moment of 2016. In September for the TV broadcast "Alati tis Gis" of ERT channel we improvised at the last moment with a small group of friends with Lefteris Poulis and Yannis Loukos, Popi Karnava's family in her Fitema's tavern alongside with Dr Lambros Liavas and his crew. We talked a lot, we ate Popi's nice mezedes and we danced listening to the violin and guitar. Our participation is from the minute 1.16 and after in the video below. Hereby uploaded a short extract of the video with Christiana's interview mentioning among others the friends- dancers of IkariaDance project.

Μια ωραία στιγμή από το 2016. Τον Σεπτέμβριο στο πλαίσιο της εκπομπής "Αλάτι της Γης" (ΕΡΤ) στήσαμε την τελευταία στιγμή μια μικρή παρέα με τον Λευτέρη, τον Γιάννη και την οικογένεια της Πόπης στο Φύτεμα μαζί με τον καθηγητή κ. Λάμπρο Λιάβα και το συνεργείο του. Είπαμε πολλά, φάγαμε τα ωραία μεζεδάκια της Πόπης και ακούσαμε το βιολάκι του Λευτέρη και την κιθάρα του Γιάννη και χορέψαμε και λίγο... Ikaria Days 2016 dance workshop

From 23-27 November 2016 Ikaria Days was organised for the second year in Brussels!  Ikaria Days is organised by the group “Friends of Ikaria” and aims to bring together Ikarians living on the island and “ex-pats” living abroad – as well as those people who like the island and have established a personal link with it. http://www.thefriendsofikaria.be/the-ikarian-days-2016/about-us/

During this initiative we participated voluntarily animating a dance workshop where many people from many different countries came in contact with the musics and the dances of Ikaria. Christiana Katsarou with the help of the IkariaDance friends in Belgium (Annick Van Steerteghem, Nicolas Tiliakos, Laurence Laloy, Anne Marie Van Hees, Frans Gijsenberg, Alessandra Ballerini etc.) animated the workshop. We all had a lot of fun and we wish to this initiative the very best! Congratulations to all the people who worked hard for this!

Η 14η Μουσική Συνάντηση Λαϊκών Πνευστών Αιγαίου στην Ικαρία

Σεπ 2016 
 

Από τις 9 έως τις 11 Σεπτεμβρίου 2016 πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Ικαρία η 14η Μουσική Συνάντηση Λαϊκών Πνευστών Αιγαίου και είχα την χαρά να την παρακολουθήσω, όπως άλλωστε και έναν σημαντικό αριθμό από άλλες παλαιότερες.
Ξεκινώντας το 2002 από την πρωτοπόρα σ’ αυτόν τον τομέα Τζιά, σε παγκυκλαδικό επίπεδο οι Μουσικές Συναντήσεις επεκτάθηκαν στη συνέχεια στο Νότιο Αιγαίο και τώρα απέκτησαν πλέον παναιγαιακό χαρακτήρα, συμπληρώνοντας 14 χρόνια παρουσίας ως ένας καταξιωμένος θεσμός κι ένα σημαντικό πολιτιστικό γεγονός.

Στόχος των Συναντήσεων είναι να εντοπίσουν, να καταγράψουν και ν’ αναδείξουν τους λαϊκούς οργανοπαίκτες του Αιγαίου που παίζουν τα παραδοσιακά πνευστά (τσαμπούνα και σουραύλι), λαϊκά όργανα με μακραίωνη παρουσία στο Αρχιπέλαγος ήδη από την προϊστορική εποχή του Κυκλαδικού Πολιτισμού, που άλλωστε ενώ θεωρείται ότι αποτελούν τη μήτρα της νησιωτικής μουσικής παράδοσης – πάνω στους σκοπούς τους ακούμπησαν οι σκοποί του βιολιού – απειλούνται με εξαφάνιση, λόγω της επικράτησης του βιολιού και του μοντέρνου «νησιώτικου» ρεπερτορίου.
Για πολλούς η τσαμπούνα είναι ένα όργανο άγνωστο, σε πολλούς ακόμα φαίνεται κουραστική κι ο ήχος της μονότονονος. Ας εξηγηθούμε λοιπόν:
Η τσαμπούνα και το τουμπάκι δεν είναι όργανα μουσικής δωματίου, ούτε θα τα ακούσουμε σε συναυλιακούς χώρους. Η τσαμπούνα και το τουμπάκι δεν έχουν πλούσια μουσική γκάμα, ούτε θα μας εντυπωσιάσουν με τις απεριόριστες εκφραστικές τους δυνατότητες. Τουναντίον, όλη η μουσική που ξεχύνεται απ’ αυτά θα στηριχθεί στις πέντε νότες, τις πέντε τρύπες του καλαμιού. Απ’ αυτές τις τρύπες, αλλά και από το ρυθμικό κτύπημα του τουμπελεκιού, θα βγούν οι ήχοι που θα ξεσηκώσουν τον κόσμο για το γλέντι και το ξεφάντωμα.
Μόνο αν χορέψει κανείς και σεληνιασθεί με τους ήχους της, γνωρίσει συναναστραφεί με τους οργανοπαίκτες της θα αντιληφθεί ότι η τσαμπούνα δεν παράγει μόνο μουσικούς ήχους. Η τσαμπούνα είναι ένα σύμβολο. Το αρχέγονο αυτό μουσικό όργανο των κτηνοτρόφων (γιατί αυτοί το παίζαν με τις ώρες καθώς βόσκαν τα προβατά τους) είναι το σύμβολο της διονυσιακής ζωής.
Κανείς τσαμπουνιέρης δεν είναι επαγγελματίας μουσικός. Όλοι τους είναι άνθρωποι της βιοπάλης, οι περισσότεροι ζουν στη φύση, αγρότες, κτηνοτρόφοι, που διακρίνονται για τη μεγαλοκαρδία τους, τη θυμοσοφία τους και την κριτική τους στάση απέναντι στη σύγχρονη καταναλωτική κοινωνία.

Έτσι, οι «Μουσικές Συναντήσεις» επιδιώκουν να φέρουν σε επικοινωνία τους οργανοπαίκτες-θεματοφύλακες του παραδοσιακού ύφους και ήθους των νησιών, να τους δώσουν την ευκαιρία ν’ ανταλλάξουν γνώσεις και εμπειρίες και ν’ αποκτήσουν κίνητρα για τη διάδοση και συνέχιση της μουσικής τους κληρονομιάς, περνώντας τη σκυτάλη στις νεότερες γενιές. Οι νέοι μουσικοί έχουν την ευκαιρία να ακούσουν τους παλαιότερους, να μαθητεύσουν κοντά τους και να μυηθούν στην αυθεντική μουσική παράδοση του Αιγαίου.
Στην Ικαρία συμμετείχαν 150 μουσικοί από 14 νησιά του Αιγαίου: τις Κυκλάδες (Άνδρος, Αντίπαρος, Κέα, Κύθνος, Μύκονος, Νάξος, Πάρος, Σαντορίνη, Σέριφος, Σύρος), τα Δωδεκάνησα (Κάλυμνος, Λέρος) και από το Ανατολικό Αιγαίο (Σάμος, Ικαρία).
Την πολυπληθή παρέα όπου πρωταγωνίστησαν οι μεγάλες μορφές των βετεράνων Μυκονιατών Κουκά, Μπαμπέλη και Καντενάσου, των Ναξιωτών Ψαροστέφανου και όπου έλαμψε η αποκαλυπτική παρουσία της μικρής Κατερίνας Γρατσία, συμπληρώνουν νέοι μουσικοί από την Αθήνα, μαζί με τους μουσικολόγους, τους φοιτητές και τους τεχνικούς που παρακολουθούν και καταγράφουν τις Συναντήσεις, με την πολύπλευρη συμβολή του Σωματείου Φίλων του Μουσείου Ελληνικών Λαϊκών Οργάνων Φοίβου Ανωγειανάκη (το οποίο συμμετέχει στη διοργάνωση ήδη από την 1η Συνάντηση του 2002) και την επιστημονική υποστήριξη του Τομέα Εθνομουσικολογίας του Τμήματος Μουσικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών.
Παράλληλα, πραγματοποιήθηκε καταγραφή της Συνάντησης από την τηλεοπτική εκπομπή της ΕΡΤ1 «Το Αλάτι της Γης».
Εκτός των μουσικών συνάξεων που έγιναν στον Εύδηλο, στον Άγιο Κήρυκο, στην Παναγιά και στο Μονοκάμπι, όπου εκεί όλοι οι μουσικοί παρουσίασαν χαρακτηριστικά κομμάτια του τόπου τους, τεθήκαν θέματα συγκρότησης της πολιτιστικής τους κοινότητας, της επιβίωσης του θεσμού και γινήκαν ενδιαφέρουσες εισηγήσεις και προτάσεις των θεωρητικών του κινήματος, όπως η δημιουργία ενός διαδυκτιακού τόπου και κύρια τέθηκε το θέμα της ενίσχυσης της προσπάθειας, του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού να εντάξει τα λαϊκά πνευστά του Αιγαίου στον κατάλογο της Άυλης Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της Ουνέσκο!

Το σημαντικότερο, κατά τη γνώμη μου συμπέρασμα από την Ικαρία , ήταν το κλίμα της συνάντησης. Ένα δαιμονισμένο κλίμα ενθουσιασμού και ευδαιμονίας. Ένα μελίσσι ανθρώπων που από τα χαραμάτα, με τον πρωϊνό καφέ, στο πούλμαν, στο καφενείο, στην ταβέρνα, στο βαπόρι – στα σαλόνια ή στο κατάστρωμα – μέχρι τις μεταμεσονύχτιες ώρες να μην σταματά να τραγουδά και να χορεύει αδιάκοπα
Η αλήθεια είναι ότι όλο αυτό το «κίνημα της τσαμπούνας» ξεκίνησε από το πουθενά πριν 15 χρόνια, και χάρις στην αδιάκοπη, επίμονη και συστηματική δουλειά του Τάσου Αναστασίου, από την Περιφέρεια Νοτ. Αιγαίου, έδωσε μία απίστευτη ώθηση στο όργανο. Πόσοι και πόσοι κτηνοτρόφοι δεν βγάλαν από τα μπαούλα τους διπλωμένες τσαμπούνες και άρχισαν να παίζουν τους λησμονησμένους σκοπούς του τόπου τους. Πόσοι και πόσοι δεν ταξίδευσαν στις συναντήσεις αυτές και δεν γνώρισαν άλλους συνάδελφους και είδαν με μεγάλη έκπληξη να παίζουν ίδια κομμάτια με άλλους σκοπούς και ρυθμούς. Απαξάπαντες όμως με το ίδιο μεράκι και καϋμό. Να ξαναζωντανέψουν οι μουσικές της τσαμπούνας. Και πόσοι πιτσιρικάδες άρχισαν να νιώθουν περήφανα για το «ζώο» που βαστούσαν στα χέρια τους. (Ως γνωστόν, ο ασκός της τσαμπούνας φτιάχνεται από το δέρμα ενός μικρού εριφιού).
Νομίζω ότι το κλίμα της συνάντησης διατυπώθηκε από τους ίδιους τους μουσικούς:
«Τόσα χρόνια δεν γνωρίζαμε τα άλλα Kυκλαδονήσια. Τώρα τα γνωρίσαμε, τώρα που μάθαμε και αγαπήσαμε τους σκοπούς, τα τραγούδια και τους ανθρώπους της. Με την τσαμπούνα γινήκαμε όλοι μια οικογένεια και περιμένουμε πώς και πώς τις συναντήσεις αυτές για να ξαναβρεθούμε πάλι όλοι μαζί».
Και ο Ναξιώτης Ψαροστέφανος από το Φιλώτι συμπληρώνει στο ίδιο πνεύμα με το κοτσάκι του (αυτοσχέδια μαντινάδα):

με τη τζαμπούνα και το τουμπί,
οι Κυκλάδες πάλι βρεθήκανε μαζί
